Three suspects tried to hijack a resident at an upmarket security estate in Northriding, Johannesburg last week by tailgating into the complex. One of the suspects attacked the security guard with a hammer. A shoot-out then ensued between two of the would-be hijackers and another resident who was alerted by the commotion.
"I live in a unit close to gate, heard the screaming, and went to my safe to retrieve my firearm," he told News24 Live, wishing to remain anonymous.

"A second suspect was holding the gate. When I confronted him he jumped behind the nearby wall and started firing at me. I fired four shots back. Somehow we seemed to have missed each other!

"A third suspect remained in the car. I fired two shots at the first suspect who attacked our guard, but I think I missed him too. After that they assaulted me and took off with my gun. Other than that, nothing was stolen," he added.

The security guard sustained head injuries and a broken arm.
