Breadwinner killed in house attack
Mr Norman Aarons was shot and killed in front of his wife Elsa, his daughter Andrea and his 5-year old grandson Liam, when the robbers targeted their home around 23:00.
Mr Aarons, who was overpowered in his bedroom, was shot while he had his hands in the air.
The robber who shot him, kicked his body out of the way, to reach the safe in which Mr Aarons’ 9mm pistol was kept.
The robbers took Mr Aarons car and house keys to prevent the family to exit the home and seek help for their dying patriarch.
The family however managed to exit, and flagged down a car to call for help.
Ambulance services and the police arrived shortly after, but Mr Aarons had already succumbed to his wound.
Mr Aarons shared the house with his wife, their daughter, her husband and two grandchildren.
The family is now worried that they will become destitute, as they cannot afford to live in the house.
Mr Aarons’ son Eric, who rushed to his family’s aid from Pretoria, picked up the bunch of keys the robbers took, in an open veld approximately a half a kilometre from the house.
The robbers fled with cell phones and wallets.
No arrests have been made.
Middelburg residents are living in fear with crime out of control with armed robberies and common robberies happening almost daily.
