“All I saw were the two black attackers running out of the house....When I walked inside the house, there was a trail of blood and they (elderly couple) were sitting in the chairs just covered in red. I had to call the ambulance...."
Durban - An elderly Durban couple was shot and stabbed in a hijacking gone awry in Reservoir Hills on Wednesday night.
The two were apparently confronted by two armed men who had tried to strong-arm them out of their car as they arrived at their Mount Batten Drive home.
An eyewitness, who had arrived at the scene just moments after the incident, spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity.
“All I saw were these two guys running out of the house and the car [which belongs to the elderly couple] was still standing in the road. There was blood all over the floor and it looked like they managed to get inside the house,” he said.
“The uncle [the elderly man] had tried to pull out his gun when they were being hijacked and I think they must have wrestled it away from him, because it wasn’t at the scene.”
“When I walked inside the house, there was a trail of blood and they were sitting in the chairs just covered in red. I had to call the ambulance for them,” he added.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the apparent motive may well have been robbery with evidence suggesting the two attackers had followed the couple into their home.
“At about 19:00, a family was held at gunpoint by an unknown number of armed men who robbed them of cash in their home. Victims were shot, stabbed and injured.
“Suspects fled in their getaway vehicle. Sydenham police are investigating a case of house robbery and attempted murder and no arrests have been made at this stage,” Zwane said.
